• Premera and LifeWise Therapist in Bellingham, Washington

Currently accepting new clients with Premera and LifeWise insurance

You may understand yourself well and still feel stuck. Anxiety may keep your nervous system constantly on alert. Experiences from the past may continue to shape your emotions, relationships, or sense of safety. Perhaps you are going through a difficult transition, feeling emotionally overwhelmed, or trying to understand deeper questions about who you are and what you believe.
You do not have to work through these things alone.
I am a licensed mental health counselor with more than 15 years of experience, and I currently accept many Premera Blue Cross and LifeWise health plans. I offer individual counseling for adults at my office in Bellingham, as well as secure online therapy for clients throughout Washington State.

Therapy that goes beneath the surface

Many of the people I work with are thoughtful, capable, and self-aware. They may have spent years trying to understand themselves, but insight alone has not brought the change or relief they hoped for.
Therapy can offer a place to slow down and listen more carefully to what is happening beneath the surface. Together, we can explore the experiences and patterns that have shaped you, understand the different parts of you that may feel afraid, overwhelmed, critical, or stuck, and find ways of responding to yourself with greater clarity and compassion.
    I commonly help adults experiencing:

    • Anxiety and persistent worry
    • Trauma and the continuing effects of painful experiences
    • Depression or loss of hope
    • Emotional and nervous-system overwhelm
    • Difficult life transitions
    • Relationship and family patterns
    • Grief and loss
    • Self-esteem and identity concerns
    • Men’s issues
    • Questions involving faith or spirituality

You do not need to arrive with a perfectly defined goal. We can begin with what feels most important and work at a pace that feels manageable.

    My approach to counseling

My style is warm, grounded, honest, and curious. I believe curiosity is a form of care. Rather than rushing to fix you or applying a formula, I want to understand your experience and help you recognize what may be keeping you stuck.
My work is relational, mindfulness-based, and insight-oriented. I draw from Internal Family Systems-informed therapy, DBT, psychodynamic therapy, and trauma-focused approaches. This means our work may include both a deeper exploration of your story and practical ways to regulate emotions, respond differently to triggers, and feel safer within yourself and your relationships.
I am also a Christian and can include faith in counseling when it is meaningful to you. You do not need to share my beliefs, and spiritual concerns will never be imposed on the therapeutic process. Therapy can be a place for honest questions, doubt, struggle, and growth.

In-person counseling in Bellingham and online therapy across Washington

In-person appointments are available at my Fairhaven office:
    Matt Meyer, MC, LMHC
    1106 Harris Avenue, Suite 201
    Bellingham, WA 98225
Secure telehealth appointments are also available for adults located anywhere in Washington State. Online counseling can be especially helpful if you live outside Bellingham, have a demanding schedule, or simply feel more comfortable meeting from home.

Using your Premera or LifeWise benefits

I currently accept many Premera Blue Cross and LifeWise insurance plans. Coverage and financial responsibility vary depending on your specific plan, including your deductible, copayment, coinsurance, and whether behavioral health services are administered through another network.
Before your first appointment, I recommend contacting the member-services number on your insurance card and asking:

    • Is Matt Meyer, LMHC, in network with my particular plan?
    • Does my plan cover outpatient mental health counseling?
    • Do I have a deductible that must be met first?
    • What is my copayment or coinsurance for a therapy session?
    • Is authorization or a referral required?
    • Are both in-person and telehealth appointments covered?

I can assist with basic insurance questions, but your insurance company is the final authority regarding eligibility, coverage, and benefits.

    Take the first step

Reaching out to a therapist can feel vulnerable, especially if you have carried things alone for a long time. You do not need to know exactly what to say or where to begin.
I offer a free 15-minute consultation so that you can tell me a little about what you are looking for, ask questions, and see whether we might be a good fit.
Change is possible. Things can get better.
